I have some exciting news about our short film, “One Last Slide.” I recently starred in a short film for the 48 Hour Film Project - St. Louis. The film debuted Wednesday evening of this week and was well-received by the audience. We have been nominated in four categories: Best Use of Mighty Kind, Best Use of Genre, Best Original Music, and Best Film. The filming was a blast to do and we’ll see how we fair moving forward in the festival. Wish us luck in the comments.

I’ve started a new term and am taking a creative writing workshop and journalism course this time around. For the workshop, I’m writing a short story I’m calling “Blood Frequency” which is a YA horror and sci-fi blend with comedic elements. I’ve always been better at writing comedy in script form — such as plays, TV, and film — but I wanted to try that again. It’s the first time I’m trying to be comedic in narrative form in like 20 years, so wish me luck. I figured the workshop would be a good time to try that as I’ll have peer reviews to let me know if it’s working. I took a workshop a few years ago and experimented in that as well, as I tried my hand at writing a story about my book series character Mercedes as a kid. I had always told myself I didn’t want to explore her childhood, and I kinda figured if I hated it that I would toss it aside after the workshop. I loved it and released it as “Her Last Halloween” which is included in the “Sweet Sixteen Killer” digital bundle for free. Hopefully, I’ll have a similar experience with this new piece. And because I always like having a visual of some kind while I’m writing, here’s a first attempt at a book cover for “Blood Frequency:”

Politics, news.

Is there a lot of awful things happening in the world right now? Yes. Am I going to dogpile while the drain is circling with misinformation, hate, and conspiracy theories? No. I will say this: love your queer family and friends. Hold tight to good and wholesome things. Hate passes, love endures.

I obviously have many more thoughts, but am more interested in truthful and good things at the moment.

Currently watching…

  • Alien: Earth. Loving this series. Alien movies have always been enjoyable experiences for the most part. This is a great new way to watch some Alien storytelling. The thing I’m enjoying the most is the incredible performances across the board. I especially think Timothy Olyphant is turning in the best performance of his career. Sydney Chandler and Alex Lawther are also turning in incredible performances. If you aren’t watching it, what’s wrong with you? It’s an FX series and is also streaming on Hulu.

A song from the story playlist.

My short story “Blood Frequency” takes place in the 1990s, so there is a number of great 90s songs on the music playlist. Here is “Wonderful” by Everclear.
